The growing demand for Nepalese coffee in international market has boosted the farmers to expand the coffee farming in Nepal. Nepal Coffee Producer’s Association (NCPA) estimates the production to reach around 600 Metric Tons very soon. The expected rise is around 5% this fiscal year.

The suitable climatic condition, farmers’ interest, and expanded plantation area for coffee has shown increment in the coffee production. The major coffee production districts are: Syangja, Palpa, Lalitpur, Ramechhap, Illam and gulmi. Syangja is one of the main producers among all.
The National Tea and Coffee Development Board Nepal (NTCDBN) have successfully distributed almost 600,000 additional saplings of coffee plants to farmers coming to the end of the current fiscal year. They have targeted to expand coffee production from 1,760 hectares to around 2,500 hectares of land this year- a very ambitious target.
Demand for Nepalese coffee is growing in the international market, especially the high altitude Arabic coffee. The major markets are USA, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, and some European nations. Compared to the imports last year, many countries including South Korea have already imported more of the Nepali coffee at mid current fiscal year.
According to NCPA, Nepal coffee is likely to get the collective trade mark approval in 10 countries very soon. The NCPA is likely to receive certificate within next 3-4 months. The government granted approval for the collective trademark last year.
